LG Pay is live now in the United States, but only on one phone
18 July, 2019, 11:54
LG Pay has finally arrived in the U.S., allowing users to carry out contactless payments with near-field communications (NFC) readers as well as wireless magnetic communications (WMC). Again, more models, including the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, LG V40 ThinQ, LG G7 ThinQ, and even the LG V35 ThinQ will be supported in the coming months. However, LG Pay similar to Samsung Pay uses the phone to generate a magnetic signal on the terminal that acts as it the user has swiped his/her credit card into the terminal and thereby facilitates the payment without swiping the card once. LG has also teamed up with Swych for digital gift cards. You can buy and send gift cards from within the app and even swap out cards with ones from different retailers.
LG Pay supports WMC (wireless magnetic communication), commonly known as magstripe terminals, but in this case, the user can not carry out the transaction by inserting a card inside the magstripe machine and then sliding it out, much like Samsung Pay. With the mobile pay market already a crowded field, LG Pay comes with some significant limitations.
At launch LG managed to get a handful of supported banks and credit unions.
In addition, LG says it's partnered with Visa and Mastercard to support their two respective credit/debit card formats at launch. That means past LG phones have the necessary hardware to replicate a magnetic credit card. A year since it was first announced, LG Pay is finally coming to the U.S. but it will only be available on one phone for now. But according to LG, other smartphones in the company's lineup will gain support in the future. As far as banks go, Chase, State Employees' Credit Union in North Carolina, PNC Bank, Regions, US Bank, and Virginia Credit Union are all onboard.
