Halep handed the American legend a 6-2, 6-2 rout in the Wimbledon final on Saturday (July 13) to become the first Romanian to win a singles title at the All England Club.

Williams has not won a grand slam final after losing the first set since 2005 so the size of the task was clear, but she was not up to it, Halep breaking serve again for 3-2 and never looking like faltering.

But at that point her opponent, Serena Williams, was shuffling towards the net, head bowed and hand outstretched.

And Halep was delighted she was able to stamp her game on the American.

It's just the second Grand Slam title for Halep, who won the French Open in 2018.

"In the meantime, I got pregnant, had a baby, so. that definitely plays a little bit into it".

Kate and Meghan were joined by Kate's sister Pippa Middleton as the trio sat together in the Royal Box on Centre Court for the Women's Wimbeldon Singles final.

During a press conference at Wimbledon, Williams was asked to comment on the negative media her friend was receiving said and she said the following, "I didn't know there was negative media out there".

"I'm very sure", Halep said, "that was the best match of my life". It was my mum's dream when I was about 10. "This record is the number one reason she came back to tennis", he said. "I felt them in the stomach", she said. "She's an inspiration for everyone and the model for everyone, but today I decided before the match that I would focus on myself and on the final of the Grand Slam, not on her".

The pattern continued in the second set - with Halep's superior speed and waspish groundstrokes allowing her to get Williams's cannonballs back with interest until she had forced the error. That's why she told me back then that it's going to be awesome and the most handsome thing to play a final.

The 56-minute dissection of the Williams playbook was the 23-time Slam winner's most lopsided loss in a major final.

Halep grew in stature and could not miss. Sportsbooks list Williams as a -184 favorite (risk $184 to win $100) in the latest Williams vs. Halep odds, with the latter getting +156 (risk $100 to win $156) as the underdog.

More than 1700 British men and women were asked if they thought they could win a point off the tennis player when playing at their very best. "Wake up Serena" someone yelled as Halep served for the first set at 5-2.

"She saw that she played unbelievably, and that's just the kind of person that she is", Williams explained.

Halep knew there would be a backlash and Williams raised the decibel level at the start of the second set, bent double, fists clenched and bellowing after a volleyed victor.

Per Sports Illustrated, Williams has the the edge and then some-commanding a 9-1 advantage over Halep, including when the two faced off at Wimbledon 2011.

The end came quickly.
