According to the New York Times, the allegation was revealed in a new court filing in which "prosecutors said that Mr. Epstein had paid significant amounts of money to influence individuals who were close to him and who might be witnesses against him at trial".

Jailed American financier Jeffrey Epstein made payments to two potential witnesses seeking to influence them in the child sex trafficking case against him late a year ago, prosecutors said late on Friday.

U.S. Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigned Friday amid a backlash over Epstein's 2009 secret plea deal he negotiated while he was a Florida federal prosecutor.

On Wednesday, Mr Acosta held a news conference to defend his handling of the deal, which allowed Mr Epstein to plead guilty to a state charge and not face federal prosecution.

Follow Trend on Telegram. This week he had been under renewed and intense scrutiny stemming from the deal under which Epstein pleaded guilty to lesser sex crimes and served 13 months in county jail, with work release during the day.

Epstein is scheduled to be in court Monday morning for a bond hearing.

The documents also said Mr Epstein was worth at least $500 million, and posed a "tremendous risk of flight".

Epstein, 66, was charged Monday in NY with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.

Since news broke of his arrest, the world has reflected on prior sexual abuse allegations against Epstein, as well as his ties to wealthy social circles that include President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, and Britain's Prince Andrew.

Acosta said his resignation would be effective in seven days.
