Japan resumes commercial whaling researchers on how the world should respond

Speaking to LADbible, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) member, Captain Paul Watson said: "Japan is not "resuming" commercial whaling".

Tokyo pledged to obey the global whaling moratorium imposed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1986.

The IWC declined Japan's proposal to resume commercial whaling of abundant species last September.

Japan's decision to leave the commission was prompted by a vote in September a year ago, in which 41 member countries opposed its proposal to lift the moratorium on commercial whaling, while 27 members supported it. In the 2017-2018 whaling season, Japanese sailors killed 333 minke whales in Antarctic waters.

He hoped whale meat would be reasonably priced so it would gain popularity in the long term instead of becoming an expensive delicacy for a limited clientele.

"The world opposes killing whales, but you can say the same thing about numerous animals bred on land and killed for food". Miss Sakai also said, "It's a part of Japan's food culture". But whale was quickly replaced by other meats.

Because the boats left port, whalers, their families and native officials in two essential whaling cities, Shimonoseki in southwestern Japan and Kushiro within the north, neatly-known the recent originate, hoping for his or her stable return and a valid pick.

The research whaling program lost money for years - 1.6 billion yen ($15 million) in the last year alone.

"'Today, we bore witness to the first victim of Japan's new era of commercial whaling; with the sad, slumped carcass of a minke whale being bought to shore", said Juliet Philips, a campaigner with Environmental Investigation Agency, who followed the hunt in Kushiro. From the late 1940s to the mid-1960s whale was the single biggest source of meat in Japan, but since then it has become a niche product. A whale research programme focused on conservation - as opposed to a whaling research programme - made up of the IWC scientific committee and Japan might have fewer conflicts as their objective would be clearer.

A spokesman for the Scotch Whisky Association urged governments and the European Union to act swiftly to resolve the crisis. Lighthizer's office is seeking public comment and will hold a public hearing on the proposed additional tariffs August 5.

The IWC's moratorium on commercial whaling has broadly been a success - whale populations have increased where whaling was the primary threat.

Japan defined meat from whales caught under research whaling as a "by-product" of its scientific study of the mammal's biology.

"There are two types of minke whale exploited off the coast of Japan", he told AFP.

He also added that he does not believe that coastal whaling will survive because of a decrease in subsidies and consumer demand.

Environmentalists worldwide urged leaders at the summit in the western city of Osaka not to ignore what they called a cruel assault on whales.

The government, however, plans to provide as much as 5 billion yen ($46 million) for projects to help stabilize commercial whaling, including development of rich whale hunting grounds and research and development in the first few years, officials said.

"What we are seeing is the beginning of the end of Japanese whaling", said Patrick Ramage, director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Japanese officials said the country will engage in sustainable practices while hunting whales, but some conservationists had denounced the country's decision.
