An alligator was spotted on a flooded street in MS where Tropical Storm Barry is bringing lots of rain and a storm surge to the Gulf of Mexico.

Barry made landfall as a category 1 hurricane on Saturday then quickly weakened to a tropical storm.

All eyes were on the Mississippi River, as forecasts showed a potential storm surge of 2 to 3 feet that could have raised the river's level to 19 feet in New Orleans.

Though the system was downgraded to a tropical depression Sunday afternoon and its winds were steadily weakening since it made landfall Saturday in Louisiana, Barry's rain bands created a flooding and tornado threat stretching from central Louisiana to eastern MS and beyond.

On Sunday evening, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said he was "extremely grateful" that Barry had not caused the disastrous floods that had earlier been forecast. At the edge of the town of Jean Lafitte just outside New Orleans, volunteers helped several town employees sandbag a 600-foot stretch of the two-lane state highway.

Around 51,000 in Louisiana, 1,800 in MS and another 1,700 in Arkansas were without power Sunday night.

"This rainfall is expected to lead to unsafe, life-threatening flooding", forecasters wrote in an advisory Sunday morning.

After briefly becoming the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, Barry was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall - but it nevertheless packed a serious punch as it moved inland.

The center of a weakening Barry is moving north through Louisiana and will eventually move into Arkansas as the circulation spins down.

The Coast Guard also rescued a dozen people from flooded areas in the parish. New Orleans, in particular, did not see the catastrophic storm surges that had been feared.
