One of the major companies was Google.

This begs the question, does Huawei actually have 'Plan B; now that top executives have admitted that HongMeng wasn't actually meant to be a mobile operating system?

Since Huawei had received a 90-day reprieve from the USA to continue using Google's Android, the future of Huawei smartphone business was at stake.

"We haven't decided yet if the Hongmeng OS can be developed as a smartphone operating system in the future".

Historically, phones running alternatives to Android - Firefox OS, Samsung Tizen, Ubuntu Touch, and Windows Phone - and even those using AOSP variants such as Amazon Fire OS, haven't done well. For now, it's to determine whether the OS was indeed created to be a mobile operating OS, let alone to compete with Android and iOS.

Liang was also quick to add that his company still preferred to work with Google and Android to develop its mobile devices.

Retooling HongMeng OS for IoT to support its devices could be a solution to strengthen its ecosystem. But not only is Huawei still shut out from buying parts it needs from the U.S. and still banned from selling its phones here - the firm is also reportedly planning to move ahead with "hundreds" of USA layoffs at its Futurewei Technologies research subsidiary.

Later on, rumor had it that the Chinese tech giant's OS was even 60% faster than Android and even MacOS.

The trademark, which was filed at the European Union Intellectual Property Office, or EUIPO, on July 12, doesn't include any information, other than this is a mobile operating system. At the moment, Huawei remains on U.S. blacklist as a potential security threat, despite Trump's reassurance. However, with Huawei's OS likely to lack the name recognition of Google's, and unlikely to have the access to Google's Play Store that it would nearly certainly need to succeed, it's unclear exactly where Hongmeng will land.

For now, it's fair to say that Huawei will use the breathing space as an opportunity to explore options so that it can avoid being in the situation altogether.
