Barcelona delayed triggering the clause immediately in the hope they could negotiate a deal with Atletico that would allow them to pay the fee in installments.

The Antoine Griezmann transfer saga is finally over - or is it?

The Spanish champions landed the ex-Atletico Madrid ace, 28, on Friday after activating his €120m release clause and signed him on a five-year deal.

Though, it was only announced on Friday with Barcelona paying Griezmann's €120million release clause.

Earlier in July, Atletico hit out at both Barcelona and Griezmann for showing them "disrespect" in reportedly agreeing a transfer in March. The Catalans were widely expected to make a move for the Atletico Madrid striker so the announcement did not cause much of a reaction among the football faithful.

"Atletico de Madrid considers that the deposited amount is insufficient to cover his buyout clause, since it is obvious that the agreement between the player and FC Barcelona was closed before the clause was reduced from €200 million to €120 million".

Following an internal debate, though, with Bartomeu and coach Ernesto Valverde both advocates for the signing, they made a decision to reactivate their interest in him.

The French soccer star began his senior career in 2009 with Real Sociedad, before joining Atletico in 2014.

"Atletico de Madrid believes that the termination of the contract happened before the end of the last season due to facts, acts and demonstrations made by the player, and therefore has already initiated the procedures it has deemed appropriate to protect their rights and lawful interests", the club added.

The 2018 World Cup victor becomes the world's sixth most expensive signing behind Ousmane Dembele, Joao Felix, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar. He also won the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup in that time.
