Yet, Google has not had much success with social networks. Google+ was officially dissolved in April this year and it looked like the company is done with building a social network in general.

Shoelace, which uses the tagline "Supercharge your social life", isn't focused on posting photos, videos and updates; instead, it's created to connect people with shared interests through in-person activities, making it ideal for those who've just moved to new cities.

It's been five months since the shutdown of Google Plus, and Google have already begun public testing of Shoelace- their new social interaction platform.

While our goal is to bring Shoelace to cities nationwide, we've made a decision to focus our efforts on New York City at first. Believed to have been first reported by Android Police, the search giant's experimental 'Area 120' team has now launched a new hyper-local news service called Shoelace that also doubles up as a social network of sorts. The match-making of Shoelace is based on the interests and picks. Shoelace is a hyperlocal app for organizing events and activities, called "Loops", which makes it similar to Facebook Events. Not unlike a dating site, users are then "tied" together based on their interests, " like two laces on a shoe". For example, Shoelace's moderators will try to ensure that content added to the app aligns with its "House Rules" and community standards. The users can also create their activities and invites others to join in. "This will help us determine what works and what doesn't as we work to make the app available to more people". The app is now available on devices running Android 8.0 and newer or iOS 11 and newer, but you can only get a download link by requesting an invite (and subsequently being approved) through Google. Google is even taking requests for suggestions on places it should bring Shoelace to next.
