Former Kentucky and National Football League quarterback Jared Lorenzen died Wednesday after a battle with cardiac and renal issues, his family confirmed to ESPN. In 2017, then weighing more than 500 pounds, the former Kentucky star launched the "Jared Lorenzen Project" to document his weight loss journey and support others battling with obesity.

As of yesterday, the most recent update from Lorenzen's family said he was "developing some traction" but cautioned that he still was dealing with renal and cardiac issues and was "very sick".

Lorenzen was hospitalized with an infection on June 29 after not feeling well for weeks.

Lorenzen's family confirmed his passing to ESPN's Jeremy Schapp. Lorenzen was placed in ICU and as he battled the infection along with kidney and heart issues. He was only 38.

Moments ago, Kentucky Sports Radio's Matt Jones tweeted out a lengthier statement from the Lorenzen family.

Iran: We will enrich uranium to 'any amount we want'
The comments come as tensions remain high between Iran and the United States over the deal, which President Donald Trump pulled America from over a year ago.

The Giants signed Lorenzen as an undrafted free agent in 2004 and he spent four seasons with the team.

After leaving the NFL, Lorenzen played in multiple indoor football leagues, including af2 and the Continental Indoor Football League. Lorenzen's 10,354 career passing yards and those 528 passing yards against Georgia are the best all-time at Kentucky.

He was inducted into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lorenzen's family and friends. The 38-year-old won a Super Bowl ring, serving as Eli Manning's backup in Super Bowl XLII. May he rest in peace.
