Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp having connectivity issues for some users

The apparent outage crippled the image-sending capacities of all three apps, though Facebook and WhatsApp seemed to be affected more than Instagram.

The Facebook outage map shows service down in the Northeast U.S. along with parts of the Southeast, Texas and Southern California.

The social media platform later blamed it on a server glitch that had a knock-on effect on Instagram and WhatsApp, according to The Independent.

Facebook's developer site shows that the issue is being worked on as of five hours ago and says that a fix "will go out shortly". Meanwhile, in Facebook, users are not able to see pictures or videos and some were getting an error code instead.

Officials would not say exactly how many people were being monitored, it is reported, though news reports suggested two people. In December, a bomb threat at its main campus in Menlo Park forced the evacuation of several buildings.

Social media users reported problems uploading photos and videos to Facebook and Instagram Wednesday. In that case, it was unclear what caused the issue though one outside expert suggested it was because of a kind of digital traffic jam in Europe.
