The victim's family, speaking to NBC Phoenix affiliate KPNX, identified the teen as Elijah Al-Amin.

Authorities say Adams stabbed 17-year-old Elijah Al-Amin last Thursday at a convenience store in a Phoenix suburb.

Defending the grisly slaying, Adams told authorities he made a decision to be "proactive rather than reactive" because people who listened to the genre have attacked him before, the news outlet reported.

He reportedly told police that rap music makes him feel "unsafe" because he had been attacked by people who listen to rap music in the past.

The story brings back memories of the 2012 murder of Jordan Davis when 45-year old Michael Dunn shot into a auto carrying Davis and several of his friends because of the volume of their music.

The witnesses told police that Al-Amin hadn't done or said anything to provoke the attack. The teen stumbled out of the store and collapsed near the gas pumps, where onlookers tried desperately to save him, according to the statement.

"Michael Adams walked up to a Black teen, Elijah Al-Amin, as he stood at the soda machine and slit his throat b/c he felt threatened by the music he listened to in his vehicle", Kristen Clark, Executive Directive of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law wrote on Twitter. "Adams further stated, people who listen to rap music are a threat to him and the community", the document said. The white suspect, 27-year-old Michael Paul Adams, says he carried out the murder because the boy was playing Hip-Hop music. Cory Booker, who's running for president, modified into as soon as one in every of many who demanded that the Department of Justice step in to investigate the homicide.

"I understand what he did was bad", she said, according to the station.

But social media users railed against the defense, flooding Twitter with the hashtag #JusticeforElijah. Davis's killer, Michael Dunn, was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Attorney Kristen Clarke and the Human Rights Campaign also disagreed with Cotterell's stance and took to Twitter to voice their belief that it was a hate crime.

The Peoria Police Department did not respond to a request for comment. Amanda Steele, public information officer for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, said the office is reviewing the case before making a charging decision. "It's not completely off the table", Sheffert said.

His lawyer, Jacie Cotterell, said her client was "set up for failure" because he was unable to get the mental health resources he required upon his release, the Arizona Republic reported.

"They released him to the streets with no medication, no meds, with no way to care for himself", she said. This is a racial issue, not a mental health issue.

The Arizona Department of Corrections says officials never designated Adams as mentally ill. Emergency personnel rushed Al-Amin to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.
