Intense turbulence struck an Air Canada flight to Australia on Thursday and sent unbuckled passengers flying into the ceiling, leaving about 35 people with minor injuries and forcing the plane to land in Hawaii.

The plane landed safely in Honolulu at 9:45 a.m. Vancouver time, said Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah.

It was over the Pacific Ocean when the plane experienced what an Air Canada spokesperson described as "un-forecasted and sudden turbulence".

"It just seemed that the plane just sank and then flew up", said passenger Sharon Thornton.

A spokesperson for Air Canada told CTV News, "Preliminary information indicates there are about 25 people who have sustained minor injuries". Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman wasn't able to immediately provide details about what kinds of injuries were involved.

Passengers told reporters the turbulence had tossed people into the air, some hitting the ceiling.

Alex Macdonald, from Brisbane, told Canadian broadcaster CBC News the passengers on board were "extremely shocked". "And I went, 'Oh, this is a bad day'".

The turbulence happened at 36,000 feet (10,973 meters) about 600 miles (966 kilometers) southwest of Honolulu, said U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor. The crew reportedly requested that medical personnel meet the aircraft at the airport.

"We are now making arrangements for the passengers including hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu, as well as options for resumption of the flight", a spokesperson told CTV.

Flight AC33 departed Vancouver International Airport late Wednesday night bound for Sydney with 269 passengers and crew onboard.
