The government has set aside more than NA$200 to buy back weapons such as AR-15 style rifles.

"Police recognise that this is a big change for the law-abiding firearms community and we are hearing really positive feedback from people as they come through today that they are finding the process works well for them", acting Canterbury District Commander Mike Johnson said, according to New Zealand Herald.

Police said 169 firearms owners handed in a total of 224 prohibited firearms, and 217 parts and accessories, with $433,682 compensated.

New Zealanders have begun giving once again their semi-automatic weapons as a major aspect of a buyback plan following a boycott after the Christchurch assaults.

Under the buyback scheme, gun owners are compensated between 25 percent and 95 percent of the pre-tax price of a new gun, depending on the condition of their weapon. The money was paid directly into the bank accounts of gun owners.

People who own guns that are not banned under the new laws can also turn over their weapons during the amnesty, although they won't get any compensation.

Police on Saturday said they had one dispute about prices.

Police Minister Stuart Nash said police knew of 14,300 registered military-style semi-automatic rifles and there were an estimated 1.2 million firearms in the community, with the vast majority still legal under the new rules.

He praised police staff for their efforts in running the event, which he said ran smoothly.

A judicial inquiry into whether New Zealand's police and intelligence services could have prevented the Christchurch mosque attacks in which 51 worshippers died began taking evidence on Monday.

More than $1 million worth of weapons have been handed over after the first weekend of the Government's gun buyback.
