The Chargers running back, entering the fifth year of his first-round rookie deal, has informed the Chargers that he won't report for training camp without a new contract, and that he'll demand a trade.

Gordon reportedly received an extension offer from the Chargers that did not align with the contracts of other top running backs such as Le'Veon Bell and Todd Gurley.

The Chargers were one of the better teams in football a year ago in large part due to Gordon on the ground and through the air. Gordon rushed for 885 yards last season on a career-high 5.1 yards per carry and tallied 14 total touchdowns.

But like-for-like replacements Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh have joined the Aussie camp in Birmingham , training with the team on Monday.

For starters, this entire situation is beyond a long shot. Though he has battled some knee injuries, he has been one of the most productive backs in the league when healthy. Even though the Los Angeles Chargers have the very talented Austin Ekeler to become the new starter, it would be surprising to move away from Melvin Gordon when they are so close to being a Super Bowl contender.

That said, it's hard to ignore the price (pun intended) of paying a running back. Furthermore, Gordon's agent, Fletcher Smith, says he will demand a trade if a new deal is not reached.

The Wisconsin product has led the Chargers in rushing in each of the last three seasons with an average of 996 rushing yards and 9.3 rushing touchdowns per season.
