Meanwhile, US Attorney General William Barr will not recuse himself from involvement in the new indictment, a Justice Department official said Tuesday.

However, conservative site Newsmax was reporting late Tuesday, based on internal White House sources, that Acosta soon planned to resign amid the escalating media feeding frenzy surrounding billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein. Former President Bill Clinton praised his intellect and philanthropic efforts and was a frequent flyer aboard his private jet.

Following the charges, the financier was able to strike a plea deal that meant he would serve just 13 months in prison - where he was allowed to leave during the day to go to his office - after pleading guilty to two state prostitution charges in 2008.

"I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm I subsequently joined for a period of time", Barr told reporters.

But on Tuesday, sitting alongside the Qatari emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, at a White House meeting, Trump said of Epstein, "I was not a fan of his". "I feel very badly about that whole situation".

Prosecutors also allege Epstein "worked and conspired with others, including employees and associates" who helped facilitate his conduct by contacting victims and scheduling their sexual encounters with the 66-year-old at his mansion in New York City and Palm, Beach, Fla. Acosta has denied any wrongdoing.

Now Epstein (66) is in jail, charged with sex trafficking by federal prosecutors who allege he abused dozens of underage women in Palm Beach, Florida, and NY.

Montana Sen. Jon Tester, another one of the few Democrats who voted to confirm Acosta, told reporters that Acosta should resign, and that he would not have voted to confirm Acosta had he known about his role in the Epstein plea deal.

Weinstein said it's unlikely because Epstein's guilty plea involved only state crimes, while the current case involves alleged violations federal law.

According to investigative journalist, author, and executive director of Alliance to Rescue Victims of Trafficking (ATRVT) Conchita Sarnoff, former President Bill Clinton is lying when he says he "knows nothing" of Jeffrey Epstein's sexual predation.

"Instead of prosecuting a predator and serial sex trafficker of children, Acosta chose to let him off easy. This is not acceptable".

Acosta also defended the 2008 deal in a letter that was included in investigative journalist Conchita Sarnoff's book about the Epstein case, 'TrafficKing'.

Also calling for Acosta's resignation were many members of Democrats' huge field of presidential hopefuls. "This type of behavior is inexcusable and should have never been rewarded with a cabinet position", he tweeted.

In a late-Monday tweet Pelosi said: "As US Attorney, he engaged in an unconscionable agreement w/ Jeffrey Epstein kept secret from courageous, young victims preventing them from seeking justice". He said he deferred to Trump to make the decision on whether to fire Acosta. Trump said he had a "falling out" with the businessman more than a decade ago.

Perino asked Patterson about Trump's remarks: "President Trump said earlier that he had a falling-out with Epstein about 15 years ago". "I don't know if (Epstein's counsels' argument is) a victor at the end of the day because of the plain language of the agreement, but it sounds like that may there be their best defense, because there seems to be an overwhelming amount of evidence". "In 2002, he said he had known Epstein for 15 years, and he was 'a terrific guy who enjoyed women on the younger side'".
