Bank of Canada makes its latest interest rate announcement

Canadian dollar nears 8-month high ahead of Bank of Canada rate decision Bank of Canada head expected to hold interest rates steady

The Bank of Canada is keeping its trend-setting interest rate steady at 1.75 per cent in a decision widely expected by economists.

"Stephen S. Poloz was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada, effective 3 June 2013, for a term of seven years".

The Canadian dollar strengthened against its USA counterpart on Monday, with the currency moving closer to last week's eight-month high ahead of an interest rate decision on Wednesday from the Bank of Canada.

"Recent data show the Canadian economy is returning to potential growth", the Bank of Canada said in a statement.

"The Fed can go ahead and cut rates twice while the Bank of Canada sits there and you may not have a move in the Canadian dollar because the markets have already factored that in", Kavcic said.

BoC maintains interest rates as expected at 1.75%.

Powell signals rate cut as trade war outweighs strong job market

Eight times a year Canada's central bank sets a target for the overnight rate, the interest major financial institutions set to borrow and lend short-term funds among themselves. Fallout from the uncertain worldwide trade environment was also reflected in the bank's updated economic projections. But analysts expect the central bank to raise its projection for second-quarter annualized growth to between 2.25% and 3%, from 1.3% forecast in April. "Canada is still somewhat optimistic that growth will pick up in Q2... though they're still concerned about trade tensions, a slowing global economy". There's probably a little greater chance of a rate cut if the Fed does see the need to cut rates more rapidly.

The Canadian economy is rebounding at a stronger-than-expected pace from a weak run that almost ground the economy to a halt in late 2018 and early 2019. It predicted growth an annual pace of 1.5 per cent for the third quarter. That perception is one of the reasons the dollar has recently strengthened and further appreciation will only make it harder for exporters to compete under difficult conditions.

"It's not just growth divergence, it's an inflation divergence", said Greg Anderson, of BMO Capital Markets. -China trade fight have rippled through the world's economy.

At the press conference, though, Poloz noted "there still is an upside scenario lurking around". That is kind of what happened with the new North American free-trade agreement. Oil prices have continued to rebound.Yesterday, API data showed U.S. crude inventories dropped 8.1 million barrels in the week ending July 5.West Texas Intermediate oil jumped to $59.28 U.S./barrel overnight after touching $57.40/b, yesterday.Additional support stems from supply disruption concerns due to elevated U.S./Iran tensions and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russian Federation decision to extend production cuts until March 2020.

But the downside scenario is much more serious and, therefore, must be taken more seriously. Other countries would retaliate, productivity would diminish and prices would rise.

The bank's news release did not lay out a future direction for Canadian rates.
