A new report today by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says prototypes of the speaker are wider than the current Echo speaker, allowing the inclusion of additional components, including at least four tweeters.
Amazon's Echo first went on sale in 2015 and has been a market leader ever since. According to "people familiar with the matter" the new Echo is going to be released "by" 2020 if everything goes according to Amazon's plan, which means you may see the new device at the very end of this year or in the very beginning of next year. Google now has 31% of the market, while the rest have a joined 12%. Amazon typically unveils a handful of devices at its September event, and it's possible we could see either device there.
Amazon is still working on a robot that will roam around homes, according to Bloomberg. Amazon's home robot can be controlled by voice and uses built-in cameras. The company also launches individual (generally less-anticipated) products throughout the year. Just as well, both the new Echo and Vesta may be scrapped by the time everything is said and done, though Bloomberg's report does state that Amazon has been pulling its engineers off other products to work on Vesta, which suggests that it intends to bring it to market. People familiar with the project speculated previous year that the Vesta could be a sort of mobile Alexa, accompanying customers in parts of their home where they don't have Echo devices.
Amazon has recently endeavored to improve the Echo's sound with changes and offered an independent subwoofer and gadget that links the speakers to a sound system. There is talk of Amazon developing an Alexa-enabled robot that could follow users around the home, like a puppy (but without the pee puddles in its wake).
A prototype for the Vesta robot is said to be about "waist-high and navigate with the help of an array of computer-vision cameras" and have wheels. The machine can be summoned by voice. Amazon, if you are reading this, give Vesta the ability to fetch things from the fridge, please and thank you!
Could that monstrosity (reportedly made by his children) have been the inspiration for an Alexa-powered home robot?
