President Trump was accused of trying to destabilise the European Union by a Fianna Fáil TD yesterday after the American leader said that Britain should pursue a no-deal exit if it does not get what it wants from negotiations.

Britain is ready to welcome US President Donald Trump. "I don't know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person".

The president made the comment in an interview published Sunday, and also said he would not pay the $50 billion Brexit divorce bill if he were in the UK's position. "They just haven't figured that out yet".

US Ambassador to Britain Woody Johnson told BBC television that Washington was already preparing the way for a trade deal and it would be done "as expeditiously as any agreement we've ever had".

"Our nation as a whole will take huge strides - and we will have done the single most important thing for freedom, for social mobility and for social justice. That is me. I would not pay, that is a tremendous number".

Still, Trump's penchant for uncensored opinions and unsolicited advice is likely to capture as many headlines, if history is any guide, as the visit's stately rituals: a banquet with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and afternoon tea with the Prince of Wales at his official residence, Clarence House.

True to form, Trump ripped up the diplomatic rule book before he even touched down by saying former foreign minister Boris Johnson would make an "excellent" choice to succeed May. "The small-minded pettiness." Mr Farage, who has met the United States president and shared pro-Brexit views on several occasions, added: "I supported him publicly, I speak to him occasionally on the phone, but I was told it was not to happen".

The visit is expected to draw crowds of anti-Trump protests, with a likely return of the baby balloon flown when the President visited a year ago.

Brexit is the most significant geopolitical move for the United Kingdom since World War Two and if it ever happens then London will be more reliant on the United States as ties loosen with the other 27 members of the EU.

The Trump administration has told allies not to use its 5G technology and equipment because of fears it would allow China to spy on sensitive communications and data.

"We have the potential to be an incredible trade partner with the UK".

A blimp depicting Trump as a snarling, nappy-clad baby will fly outside Britain's parliament during the visit while protesters plan a "carnival of resistance" in central London.

Jeremy Corbyn, the socialist leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, who has declined an invitation to attend the state banquet, scolded Trump for getting involved in British politics.

On successive days, Mr Trump led British headlines with his views on the country's political crises.

On Wednesday, Trump joins the queen and veterans to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in the southern English city of Portsmouth, and also makes a trip to Ireland.
