The hospital identified her as 17-year-old Paige Winter of New Bern.

Paige Winter, 17, was in the ocean off Fort Macon State Park when she was attacked by a shark on Sunday (local time), according to a statement from Vidant Medical Center. Winter already had her left leg amputated after being flown to a hospital and has hand injuries.

"Her family expresses their appreciation for the first responders, the individuals on the beach who helped, and her heroic father who saved her life", said Vidant Medical Center.

A GoFundMe page for Paige and her father has already received over $5,000 (£3,900). "Despite this unfortunate circumstance, Paige is an unwavering advocate for the marine life and the animals who live in the water". She said she would continue to stay positive and thankful that it wasn't worse.

In a Facebook post, Janet Winter said that Paige had lost one of her legs and some of her fingers. "Please keep her in your prayers".

Her father was able to get the shark off of his daughter by punching it in the face several times. It said she was recovering and listed in "good" condition as of late Sunday.
