Spain won a game at the Women's World Cup for the first time, beating South Africa 3-1 on Saturday behind two penalty kicks by Jennifer Hermoso.

The first penalty came after a handball by South Africa captain Janine van Wyk and the second after follow through tackle by full back Nothando Vilakazi on Garcia which earned Vilakazi a second yellow card and a dismissal.

The Atletico Madrid playmaker then grabbed her second of the encounter, once again converting a penalty as Spain turned the game on its head in a matter of minutes.

Hermoso tucked away spot-kicks in the 70th and 83rd minutes to give Spain a winning start to their Group B campaign after South Africa, in their first appearance at the finals, took a surprise first-half lead.

Lucia Garcia then put the game beyond reach in the 89th minute after she went past keeper Andile Dlamini to score her first worldwide goal.

Spain was not done, though, as Garcia capped her impressive cameo with a composed finish to move the team to the top of Group B.

It was the second Group B match of the day: Earlier the second-ranked Germans defeated China 1-0 in Rennes.

In Group A, a first-half blitz by Norway saw them beat Nigeria 3-0. Germany, China, Spain and South Africa are in the same group.

The 1995 winners played without Ada Hegerberg, the 2018 Fifa Ballon d'Or victor who stepped down from the national team because of what she says are differences in the way the Norwegian federation treats the men's and women's teams. An own goal made it 3-0 and wrapped up scoring before the break.

Nigerian defender Faith Michael was stretchered off after a collision with team-mate Tochukwu Oluehi.
