The United States joined its Saudi, Emirati and British allies in urging a diplomatic solution to soaring tensions with Iran, as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought Monday to build a coalition to step up surveillance.

The United States later unveiled rounds of sanctions against Iran, targeting its economic, financial and transportation sectors, among others.

"The UAE reiterates its solidarity with Saudi Arabia against any threat to its security and stability and supports all measures taken by the Saudi government to maintain the security of its citizens and residents", said the statement carried by the UAE news agency (WAM).

Berlin appears cool toward USA talk of a global coalition against Iran as it tries to salvage the nuclear deal.

The U.S. has been building up its military presence in the Gulf.

Mr Pompeo's visit to Abu Dhabi followed a meeting in Saudi Arabia with King Salman and came as US President Donald Trump called on consumers of oil from the Middle East to take greater responsibility for protecting shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

When asked if the Europeans had threatened a sanctions snapback if Iran breaches the cap on its stock of low-enriched uranium, Ravanchi said: "Our discussions with our European colleagues are ongoing, we discussed a number of issues, but. we can not accept any intimidation or any threat from anybody".
