"There's so many uses up in space and that's what we wanna do right now is use these American resources to spur the American economy, and use that extra revenue now to go further in space, get back to the moon and go to Mars", DeWit said, setting a lunar deadline for 2024.

NASA will allow private citizens to stay at the International Space Station (ISS) for month-long getaways at a cost of about $35,000 per night, the USA space agency said on Friday.

"This is a momentous day for, not only NASA and the space economy, but honestly for USA industry as a whole", said the space agency's CFO Jeff DeWit.

Russian Federation has already let private citizens onto the station, so it won't be the very first time a non-professional astronaut heads to space, WaPo reported.

NASA said that tourists would be allowed to stay for up to 30 days at the ISS with the trip made via a United States spacecraft.

NASA has announced a plan to allow tourists to fly on the International Space Station for the first time starting next year.

Nasa is to allow tourists to visit the International Space Station from 2020.

NASA have announced that the International Space Station will soon be open for business. The goal is to "accelerate a thriving commercial economy in low-Earth orbit".

'This is all building off our upcoming Commercial Crew vehicles transporting astronauts, which will be used by both government and private citizen astronauts, ' DeWitt said.

There's likely to be a hefty waiting list too (if you can afford it), as Nasa said in a statement that they can accommodate "up to two short-duration private astronaut missions" each year.

Astronauts have lived aboard the space station for more than 18 years conducting thousands of experiments.

NASA astronaut Christine Koch offered up a basic introduction to the new moves in a video recorded on the ISS.

The ISS program is the result of a collaboration between NASA and the various space agencies of Canada, Europe, Japan and Russian Federation.

In addition to maintaining a sustainable commercial presence in low-Earth orbit, the agency expects commercial entities to play a central role in establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon.
