Since Mickey Paulk's Athens apartment was searched on Monday morning, the caged squirrel has been released into the wild, Limestone County Sheriff's Office's Public Information Officer Stephen Young confirms to PEOPLE.

Investigators said they searched an apartment in the 21000-block of Piney Chapel Road around 8:30 a.m. Monday after they received tips about an "attack squirrel" being fed meth to keep it aggressive.

The sheriff's office said that prior to the drug raid, officials were told Paulk kept an "attack squirrel" in his home, AL.com reported.

Another man who was inside the apartment, 37-year-old Ronnie Reynolds of Ardmore, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and loitering at a known drug house.

At this time, it is unclear how or why Paulk allegedly kept the wild animal inside his apartment.

Paulk is wanted by police for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and firearms possession, police said.

Officers found meth, drug paraphernalia, body armour and ammunition inside the home, as well as the squirrel.

The furry creature was released to a nearby wooden area on the advice of state conservation officials, Young said. He has since been released on $4,000 bond.

Authorities said there was not safe way to test the rodent for meth.

A man who is accused of keeping an "attack squirrel" locked in cage and feeding it methamphetamine so it stays aggressive has appeared on video denying the allegations while holding what he claims is the same animal. It's illegal to have a pet squirrel in Alabama, so additional charges for that, as well as animal cruelty charges, could be possible.
