In 1944, an American soldier based in France during World War II fell in love with an 18-year-old girl from a small French town.

Robbins still has mementos from serving five years in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Robbins had been looking for someone to wash his clothes, and her mother agreed to help.

Two months later, he was sent to the front-line, and their paths never crossed again-until a French documentary maker set up a surprise reunion as Robbins returned to France to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The pair eventually married other people, but neither ever got over their first love.

"When he left in the truck, I cried, of course, I was very sad", Pierson said. "I wish after the war he hadn't returned to America".

As the war ended, she even learned some basic English phrases in the hope that Robbins would return.

The former lovers spent a few hours together before Mr Robbins had to leave for the D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

He returned to MS after the war, where he met his wife of 70 years, who passed away four years ago.

Later in the clip, the two are seen reuniting at Ms Pierson's retirement home, where they embrace. She passed away in 2015 at the age of 92.

And for the first time in 75 years, Robbins (now 97) was given another chance to see his 92-year-old French lover.

Ms Pierson also fell in love again.

The pair, who both married other people but are now widowed, met at the retirement home where she now lives.

Despite marrying, Robbins kept a black and white photo of his wartime sweetheart.

A local group called Forever Young Veterans heard about Robbins' story, so they wanted to help him get back to France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

The journalists organised a reunion for the both of them and it's so sweet!

"I'm going to show you something. You never got out of my heart", Robbins told his long lost love, according to the BBC.

"He said he loves me. I understood that much", Pierson told one of the journalists in French.

Robbins then took out a photo of Pierson from his jacket that he had kept all along.

"After I left, she thought I was coming back", Robbins said.

"I always thought about him", she told the cameras. "I wish he had come back".

"You know, when you get married, after that you can't do it anymore", Robbins replied.

Pierson and Robbins meet.

Turns out, they've loved each other for all this time.
