If it sounded as though they were in a boozer while glued to a TV, say, the user's location would be used by the software's overlords to verify the punter was in an establishment that had all the right paperwork and subscriptions for showing the game in a commercial setting.

La Liga is planning on removing the microphone feature from the app by the deadline, but is determined to not remove it in its entirety.

La Liga insists that it was not possible to listen to users" voices and all it did was collect a "sound footprint' that could not be turned back into the content of an actual recording, so therefore there was no collection of personal data. The league claims that the app asks for permission to entry the cellular phone's microphone and space, and that the solutions - which is bought as a code, now no longer audio - is most productive primitive to detect LaLiga streams.

They then could use geo-location technology in the app to determine the exact location to find out if it was showing matches illegally. But it turns out it was accessing the microphone of phones it was installed on - some 10 million, along with the handset's geolocation to record audio at bars, according to Spanish news outlet El Pais.

Users had to give consent for the app to use their device's microphone.

La Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD) has fined LaLiga for $280,000 for violating the European Union's data privacy laws.

La Liga plans to continue using its fans in that fight against piracy.

However, La Liga has vowed to appeal the decision saying that the AEPD does not understand the technology and had made no effort to.
