Queen Elizabeth, donning a cheerful cornflower blue ensemble and a hat adorned with summertime blooms, led the grand carriage procession onto the Ascot grounds. There were hats! And most of all, there were royals.

This year's ceremony was particularly special, given Letizia and Máxima's husbands - King Felipe VI of Spain and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, respectively - were invested as Knights of the Garter. Kate Middleton wore an icy-blue Elie Saab dress and a hat pinned with a blue rose (very much color-coordinating with the queen).

This year, the Queen was joined by Kate Middleton, Zara Tindall, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, to name a few. The 37-year-old mother-of-three's Royal Ascot nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, came by way of her sapphire and diamond engagement ring. A top hat-clad Prince William sat across from her. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were absent, presumably spending time with their young son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

In addition to exciting horse races, the event features some serious fashion from attendees.

And despite the drizzle and cloudy skies, the royal party seemed to be enjoying every second of Royal Ascot.

But one person who wasn't there was Meghan Markle, who is said to have enjoyed her debut at the event past year. Each day of the week begins with the Royal Procession, when HM & accompanying Members of the Royal Family arrive along the track in horse-drawn landaus.
