Egypt's former president Mohamed Morsi has died during a court appearance, according to state television.

Morsi, who was 67, was pronounced dead shortly after fainting during the session, which he attended as a defendant.

The criminal court was reviewing espionage charges against Morsi and 23 other Muslim Brotherhood members, when the former Egyptian president collapsed.

The troubled politician, who hailed from Egypt's largest Islamist group, the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, was elected president in 2012 in the country's first free elections.

Morsi's body has been transferred to an unnamed hospital.

Last year, a group of British MPs and lawyers issued a grave warning that Mr Morsi faced an early death because of the poor conditions in the jail in which he was being held.

That followed the ouster the year before of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi, often described as a divisive figure, spent just one year in office before being toppled by the army in July 2013.

The state broadcaster said that the deposed leader requested permission to speak in court, which the judge granted.
