It's not just Quest: LabCorp says it was also hacked

More than 7 million LabCorp patients might have had their information stolen, feds say Breach at billing collection agency hits LabCorp, Quest Diagnostics patients
Anna Jefferson | 08 June, 2019, 08:27

The breach has affected 12 million of Quest's patients, whose personal information was maintained by AMCA.

According to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing on Monday, Quest reported that 11.9 million of its records were compromised by a security breach of its collections provider American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA).

More actions may be taken once LabCorp receives more information about the AMCA data breach, the company said.

Quest Diagnostics, one of the biggest blood testing providers in the country, admits almost 12 million patients' financial and medical data may have been breached between August 1, 2018 - March 30, 2019.

AMCA informed LabCorp that more than 200,000 customers, whose credit card or bank account numbers were possibly exposed are being notified.

This is not Quest's first brush with data security issues. Finally, Quest is only one of AMCA's medical clients, so it is possible that patient information from other healthcare providers may have also been breached.

One more reason to reject Trump's tariffs: Hurting Mexico hurts us
Under such a plan, the United States would swiftly deport Guatemalan asylum seekers who set foot on US soil to Mexico. Chamber of Commerce and its Mexican counterpart, the Business Coordinating Council, said in a joint statement .

LabCorp said it will no longer do business with AMCA.

"LabCorp takes data security very seriously, including the security of data handled by vendors", the company said Tuesday.

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, almost 447 million records were exposed in 1,244 breaches past year. Warner pointed to apparent gaps in oversight, expressed concern about the impact of cyber-attacks on the health care sector, and conveyed his desire to work alongside stakeholders to develop strategies that strengthen information security.

Large corporations are frequent targets. In 2017, the Equifax hack exposed the data of 145.5 million people.

Sen. Menendez has authored a package of consumer protection bills aimed at safeguarding Americans' personal information from data breaches and holding accountable those companies who fail to do so.

It is not yet clear if the incidents were related, but LabCorp announced earlier this week that it is already in the process of contacting its affected customers. Last month, the U.S. Justice Department charged two Chinese nationals in the attack.
