Scorching heatwave conditions gripped large swathes of the country Saturday as the mercury crossed the 50-degree mark in Rajasthan's Churu, while several other places endured maximum temperatures markedly above normal with the weatherman saying there will be no respite until next week.

The Meteorological Department in neighbouring India has also warned of severe heat in northern and central areas on Monday, following similar extreme weather the previous day.

The IMD said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail over Rajasthan, Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh during the next five days and over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and south Uttar Pradesh during the next three.

The ten Indian cities featured in the list are Churu (50.3 degrees), Ganganagar (48.8 degrees), Bikaner (48.4 degrees), Phalodi (48.2 degrees), Jaisalmer (47.8 degrees), Nowgong (47.7 degrees), Narnaul (47.6 degrees), Kota (47.5 degrees), Pilani (47.5 degrees) and Barmer (47.2 degrees).

There was little change in temperature in Delhi with the Palam Observatory recording a high of 42.4 degree Celsius.

The temperature recorded over 45 degrees on Monday in several cities in India.

Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra also battled heatwave conditions.

Jammu recorded a high of 40.1 degrees Celsius and a low of 25 degrees Celsius.

Even in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, where many wealthy Indians go to escape the summer heat, temperatures reached 44.9 Celsius in Una. In a developing country like India, that includes not just the old, sick, and young but also millions of people who lack access to air conditioning, raising the risk of heat-related illness.

The minimum temperature in city stood at 29.7 degree Celsius, slightly above normal.

Across North India, cities have been sweltering with temperatures above 47°C, with the India Meteorological Department predicting no relief any time soon.

Rains in most parts of Odisha, mainly the western region, brought down the mercury. Maximum temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius is treated as a heat wave in the plains, above 37 degrees Celsius in case of coastal areas, and above 30 degrees Celsius in hilly areas.
