The file-syncing automatically added images from your Google Photos account to Google Drive and vice-versa. However, this syncing process can cause unexpected file deletion and the fact that the folder and the Google Photos service have the same name makes things even more confusing.
So Google has made a decision to retire the file syncing on July 10 in order to "prevent accidental" image deletions, Google said in a Wednesday blog post. Items you delete in Photos will not be deleted in Drive and vice versa.

The company is also introducing a new feature to the Google Photos desktop app called Upload from Drive, which allows you to manually choose files from Google Drive to add to Photos. Copied items are not linked back to the original service.
Google Photos is one of the better services Google offers right now - free unlimited backups of photos and videos across all your devices - and one of my favorite tricks for Google Photos was that everything I took wound up in a dedicated Google Drive folder for easy access and organization, but that feature's days look like they're numbered. This also means that such a move would end up eating more space especially if the copied item is of "original" quality, as only "high" quality images do not count against storage space. Any photos that have synced between the services prior to this change will remain in both places, too. Similarly, those that you upload on Drive will not be synced to your Photos app anymore since you probably don't need them to be there anyway.
Luckily, one thing about all of this is very straightforward: when July 10 comes along, all your current files in both Google Drive and Google Photos will remain unchanged.
