Google gives up on tablets, leaving Apple's iPad as the tablet king

No new Google-branded tablets; Pixel Slate is now a collector's item Google had made its last tablet

That'll certainly need some thought, if you're a 3rd-party hardware maker - should I still try to make a tablet with Chrome OS if Google's decided it's not in their interest to continue with the hardware themselves?

Another reason holding back Google's Pixel Slate was the price point.

ComputerWorld was the first to report on Thursday that Google has chose to step away from making tablets on its own and will just focus on laptops. Slate will never going to provide the best Microsoft experience to its users who want a full-blown PC experience on a tablet.

Computerworld reported that Google reportedly just killed off its plans to make two tablets to follow the Pixel Slate from 2018.

We have bad news and good news about Google. Google will still release software updates to the Pixel Slate until the year 2024 so don't throw the tablet yet.

Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of devices and services, confirmed in a tweet that Google will stop making its own tablets, and said that hardware teams will instead focus on building laptops.

Google's decision to let go of tablets will not be affecting Pixel phones or Home/Nest products. Rumors have suggested that Google is working on a follow-up to its premium Chrome OS-based laptop, and the working of its statement conspicuously leaves the door wide open for a new laptop. On the Android side, Samsung is the only company making serious attempts to sell premium tablets.

Google typically hosts its annual hardware "Made By Google" release event every October. Google is expected to launch a new Pixelbook called Pixel 4 later this year. The tablet had a solid display and offered mouse and trackpad support, but it was also expensive for the category, especially when compared with the wider Chromebook market.

Last year's Pixel Slate wasn't the hottest property in town, garnering mediocre reviews for its implementation of Chrome OS, with reviewers saying that it simply wasn't ready for the tablet form factor.
