Ford Motor Co said on Wednesday its North American unit will spend $180 million to correct a suspension issue in Explorer vehicles. Now there's another one, as Ford recently announced that select models of the 2011 - 2017 Explorers need to be recalled. So far, Ford says they have only had one reported crash and no injuries reported.
Ford says a rear suspension toe link fracture can significantly diminish steering control increasing the risk of a crash.
Separately, Ford is planning to recall 12,000 vehicles in Canada only, for a similar toe link issue as the Explorers. Ford is not aware of any reports of injury related to this condition in markets included in this action.
The recall will affect about 1.2 million vehicles in the US, 28,000 in Canada and one SUV in Mexico.
The SUVs in question were built at Ford's Chicago plant, between May 17, 2010, and January 25, 2017.
Drug delays type 1 diabetes in people at high risk The research is the first to show that the progression of type 1 diabetes can be slowed by two or more years with immunotherapy. Just 19 (43%) of participants treated with teplizumab were diagnosed with T1D, versus 23 (73%) of participants on placebo.
The fix in both recalls will see dealers replace the left- and right-hand rear suspension toe links with new forged units and re-align the suspension. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S17. A previous software update didn't work.
A vehicle without the intended 19S07 calibration remains at risk for unintended transmission downshift due to intermittent output speed sensor failure. If traveling at a high speed, this downshift could be unsafe and lead to a loss of control. The issue has been tied to at least one minor accident that did not result in an injury.
This action affects approximately 123,000 vehicles in North America, including approximately 107,850 in the United States and federalized territories and approximately 15,200 in Canada. Those vehicles were assembled at Ford's Dearborn plant between May 7, 2012, and October 27, 2013; and its Kansas City plant from April 18, 2012, to November 18, 2013.
Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module with the appropriate software calibration.
How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Those recalls include vans that have a school bus or ambulance prep package. The concerns, in this case, are with a weld in the clutch that could fail and prevent them from moving. All normal engine, braking and steering functionality is unaffected. The result could be a loss of mobility, which Ford admits is especially problematic for transporters of schoolchildren and hospital patients. The affected vehicles range from model year 2009 through 2017.
