A spokeswoman for the family of a slain Chicago woman whose baby was cut from her womb with a butcher knife says the infant boy has died.
Her son died on Friday of severe brain injury, the family spokeswoman said. The baby was cut from his mother's womb and his mother was killed. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Friday that he expects both women will now be charged with murder in the baby's death.
After hearing the testimony, Ortiz denied bond to the Figueroas, who are charged with murder, saying she felt "the presumption is great" that they committed a "heinous and brutal murder" and that they pose "a real and present" danger to the community.
Ochoa-Lopez was found dead in a garbage can in the backyard of a house in Chicago on May 15, where she went missing on April 23. Later that day, Clarisa Figueroa called 911 claiming that she had just given birth.
The three defendants are due back in court June 26.
Julie Contreras, a spokesperson for the family, posted a statement to her Facebook page revealing news of Yovanny's death.
Figueroa connected there with Ochoa-Lopez, who at that time was seven months pregnant, Murphy said.
She posted on the page again the following month, asking, "Who is due in May" and "Where is the May mama's at".
Authorities say that not long after Clarisa Figueroa's adult son died of natural causes, she told her family she was pregnant.
He was admitted to the hospital in what police described as "grave" condition.
Suspicious, detectives spent the next several days subpoenaing hospital records and collecting DNA samples from the baby and Clarisa Figueroa.
Armed with a search warrant, crime lab officers searched Figueroa's house.
Once Ochoa stopped showing signs of life, Clarisa Figueroa cut the baby from her womb and she and her daughter wrapped the teen's body in a blanket, put it in a plastic bag and dragged it outside to a garbage can, according to prosecutors.
A medical examiner determined that she died of strangulation, and Desiree Figueroa told detectives she helped her mother kill her, police said.
