Former slugger David Ortiz arrived in Boston on a Red Sox team plane and was taken to a hospital on Monday, a day after he was shot in the back while at a Dominican Republic nightclub.

He said Ortiz's liver was also damaged in the shooting on Sunday night.

Ortiz arrived in Boston on Monday night from the Dominican Republic in serious condition.

Ortiz, 43, is one of the most beloved figures in sports history in the Dominican Republic and in Boston, a fearsome power hitter with a ready smile.

Ortiz led the Red Sox to three World Series championships - including, in 2004, their first title in 86 years of futility. In the USA, fans prayed for his recovery.

From New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady: "Papi defines Boston Strong... get well soon my friend!"

He initially underwent emergency surgery at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo.

After shooting Ortiz, he was apprehended and beaten by a crowd at the bar. But the gunman has not been arrested, and investigators were trying to establish whether Ortiz was the target.

Ortiz's father, Leo, told reporters he had no idea why someone would have shot at his son. Officials believe Lopez was injured by the same bullet that entered Ortiz, National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said, according to the Boston Herald.

There's no denying David Ortiz left a big impact on a lot of people.

The Red Sox issued a statement on Tuesday morning on behalf of David Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, with an update on Big Papi's recovery.

Two other people were wounded, including Jhoel López, a Dominican TV host who was with Ortiz.

Police said it is unclear whether Ortiz was targeted. Police did not detail the injuries to the third person or make an identification.

Ortiz, who was born in Santo Domingo, played major league baseball for 20 seasons and is best known for the 14 years he spent with Boston.

"They talk about superheroes without capes and he's a superhero without a cape", Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who a former teammate of Ortiz's in Boston, said during a pregame news conference. He maintains a home in Weston, on the outskirts of Boston.
