Cyclone VAYU likely to cross Gujarat coast as Severe Cyclonic Storm on June 13

Early Tuesday morning, it will intensify into a cyclonic storm and severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 24 hours. The storm, moving northward from its current position off the Konkan coast, is likely to slam into the Saurashtra coast between Porbandar and Mahuva (around Veraval and Diu).
Cyclone Vayu, season's first in the Arabian Sea has finally formed and is likely to see further intensification as well. The state government has made a decision to deploy 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch from June 11 morning.
On Monday the State experienced gusty winds with speeds of 35 to 40kmph.
Fishermen who ventured into the sea have been called back, he said.
It was centred over the Eastcentral Arabian Sea, about 460 km north-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 540 km southsouthwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 690 km almost south of Veraval (Gujarat) during the early morning hours.
The Gujarat government has deployed 15 teams of NDRF personnel in Saurashtra and Kutch from Tuesday morning. Gujarat CM Shri Vijay Rupani is personally monitoring the situation.
The government also advised people to keep essential items, including drinking water, medicines and charged batteries, in stock and stay away from the sea. The storm is expected to peak on June 13 when the wind speed could reach 135 kilometres per hour (kmph).
"It (Cyclone) is very likely to cause an adverse impact in terms of wind and rainfall over Saurashtra and Kutch, mainly on June 13 and 14", a statement by the MeT department said.
The monsoon was anyway expected to be delayed by a week due to its late arrival in Kerala, said another official. "Once a storm signal is raised, conditions are not yet necessarily felt in the given area".
Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat.
