Collins: 'The '70s called, they want their star witness back'

Former White House counsel John Dean testified about parallels between President Donald Trump and his former boss, Richard Nixon, at the first hearing of the House Judiciary Committee aimed at understanding Robert Mueller's findings. The report examined several episodes in which Trump attempted to influence Mueller's probe.

Nadler said that under the deal with Justice he will hold off on a threat to bring criminal contempt charges against U.S. Attorney General William Barr.

But a strong majority of voters said the probe and report by Mueller's team were credible - 61 percent said the investigation was conducted fairly and without bias.

He added: "Here we are again with priorities in this committee turned upside down". He repeated it. And he pointed out very clearly, if we had had sufficient information to exonerate the president, he would have said so.

Napolitano explained the legal implications of the deal struck between Barr and House Judiciary chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) during a morning appearance on Fox & Friends. "I don't leave. Big difference".

The hearing had a farcical character, as the Democrats have been unable to secure agreement by any Trump official to testify on the Mueller report due to the administration's wholesale refusal to comply with requests or subpoenas from the Democratic-led House for testimony or documents from current or former administration officials. Mueller himself has also refused so far to agree to a date to testify publicly, privately expressing worries about being used politically by partisans on both sides.

A court case could come more quickly for McGahn, who has defied subpoenas for documents and testimony at the behest of the White House.

Nadler's announcement comes after the Judiciary Committee voted to hold Barr in contempt last month, after the Justice Department did not comply with a subpoena seeking access to an unredacted version of Mueller's Russian Federation report, as well as underlying documents and evidence. Many lawyers believe the president's claim in these circumstances is weak because Mueller's report has been released publicly, albeit with redactions.

Ahead of Dean's testimony before the Judiciary Committee, Trump lashed out at Dean on Twitter, calling him a "CNN sleazebag attorney".

Barr and Ross won't agree to give members of Congress materials they've sought in connection with the Trump administration's desire to ask a question about citizenship in the 2020 census.

"This committee is now hearing from the '70s and they want their star witness back. Sorry, no Do Overs - Go back to work!" Besides Dean, two former US attorneys and a legal scholar are scheduled to appear.

The Justice Department has been giving ground in that dispute, and on Monday it said members of the Judiciary Committee would get access to previously restricted evidence.

He said he was not bothered by Trump's tweets.

"He's called me nasty names before", Dean said. "It doesn't bother me in the slightest".

Representative Doug Collins, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said the agreement indicated the Trump administration was not stonewalling Congress, adding that Democrats should focus on the threat from Russian Federation.
