The move to ban single-use plastics has already been panned as pointless and risky as most alternatives either risk harming some individuals or have the potential to do more environmental damage in the long-run.

Less than 10 per cent of plastics used in Canada are now recycled, he said. The government said that 1 million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals worldwide are injured or die each year when they mistake plastic for food or become entangled.

Canada has pledged to ban single-use plastics and "hold companies responsible" for plastic waste by 2021.

He said yesterday: 'To be honest, as a dad, it's tough trying to explain this to my kids.

"It's going to take a little bit of time to make sure we get it absolutely right because this is a big step but we know that we can do this by 2021", Trudeau said.

The move could lead to increased costs for industry and its customers, Thayer said, but also opens up opportunities for Canadian companies to take the lead in finding new and innovative ways to better recycle and reuse plastics.
