Funding the free licences, which have been available to all over-75s for almost two decades, is due to be transferred from the Government to the BBC next year as part of an agreement hammered out in 2015.

"Many older people in Nottingham North will be left feeling isolated and alone".

The corporation has said free licences will be means-tested under a new scheme that intends to protect programming while dealing with the extra funding burden. "Taking their free TV licence away is a cruel blow". "TV is all some of the elderly have in their lives". It is a source of companionship - the noise keeps the loneliness at bay.

He added: "The means-testing thing really angers me".

Many have criticised the move, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who said that providing over-75s with free TV licences "is not too much to ask", and senior Conservative Andrea Leadsom, who called for the new ruling to be scrapped.

"They raise huge amounts of money for Children In Need; why don't we do Pensioners in Need?"

"In the same week that Boris Johnson has championed tax cuts for the richest eight per cent his Government has delivered yet another ruthless welfare cut to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. It really is very worrisome for them".

"I know that some of my constituents will be concerned about how they will be able to afford their TV licence going forward".

The Labour Party and I will fight to reverse this change.

"I'm fortunate that I have enough to see me through, but for others who find it hard to make ends meet it seems unfair".

From June 2020, around 3.7 million households which previously received a free licence will have to pay for one.

The TV star said it is "wrong" to means-test older people after the corporation announced that, from June 2020, the concession will only be available to households where someone receives Pension Credit.

Stressing that many older people "rely on television as a lifeline", the organisation's head of policy Kevin Higgins said: "We already know that there are problems with eligibility and uptake of pension credit, and many people who are entitled to it don't claim it".

Mr Higgins urged people to check if they are eligible for pension credit by calling 0808 802 0020.

In 2015, ministers decided the BBC would take over the cost of providing free licences for over-75s by 2020 as part of the licence fee settlement.
