Watch again: Amanda Knox in Italy for first time since acquittal for murder
17 June, 2019, 19:01
Knox, a former American exchange student who became the focus of a sensational murder case, arrived Thursday in Italy for the first time since an appeals court acquitted her in 2011 in the slaying of Kercher, her roommate. Italy's Supreme court eventually cleared Knox of all wrongdoing one year later.
Amanda Knox broke down in tears as she appeared at a criminal justice festival in Italy this morning. "The tabloids would lift my photos out of context and call me unusual", she wrote.
"To tell the truth I am afraid, afraid of being harassed, insulted, afraid of being trapped and new accusations being directed at me", she said.
In the run-up to the trip, Knox said many people thought she was insane for going back to Italy: "I was told it's not safe, that I'm going to be attacked in the streets, that I could be sent back to jail".
She returned to Italy this week for the first time since being released from prison in 2011, to participate in a debate entitled "Trial by Media" at the Criminal Justice festival in Modena.
Knox acknowledged that despite her final acquittal "I remain a controversial figure in the public opinion, especially here in Italy". But my innocence didn't save me, because the media created a version of me that did not fit with that story.
A retrial in 2014 reinstated Ms Knox and Mr Sollecito's convictions but Italy's top appeals court docket finally overturned their convictions in 2015.

Alongside her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, Ms Knox was arrested on suspicion of murdering Ms Kercher, 21, who was found dead in their house.
Knox said she agreed to speak in Modena, located not far from Bologna, because she was invited and because the cause was close to her heart.

The prosecution alleged Knox and Sollecito had delivered the fatal blow while Guede restrained the victim.
Defence lawyers argued their clients could not get a fair trial because of the media frenzy over the murder, with lurid headlines seizing on the young USA student's nickname "Foxy Knoxy".
Only one person - Rudy Guede, an Ivory Coast-born drug dealer - was handed a definitive guilty verdict in Kercher's killing, in 2010.
In an essay published online on Wednesday, she recalled fleeing the country "in a high-speed chase, paparazzi literally ramming the back of my stepdad's rental car".
