The latest raids come amid spiralling regional tensions after Washington - a key ally of Riyadh - accused Iran of shooting down a USA drone and carrying out attacks on oil tankers in the strategic Gulf of Oman. The US military confirmed that the aircraft had been shot down, claiming, however, that it was flying in global airspace in the Strait of Hormuz.

Seyed Abbas Mousavi, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, disclosed on Monday that Tehran will "take legal action against the US", according to comments carried in Iran's state-controlled media. The sanctions, re-imposed after Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal, have crippled the Iranian economy and pushed up the cost of living.

At the same time, Pompeo reiterated that the US was prepared to negotiate with Iran to ease tensions.

He said the United States sought a coalition "not only throughout the Gulf States but in Asia and in Europe that understands this challenge and that is prepared to push back against the world's largest state sponsor of terror".

Washington has repeatedly imposed sanctions on Tehran since previous year when the USA withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for easing of sanctions.

Germany, Britain and France have sent envoys to Tehran recently, signaling they remain committed to diplomacy and dialogue. The Israeli leader appears to be wary of being seen as pushing the USA into a new Middle Eastern military conflict.

Berlin appears cool toward USA talk of a global coalition against Iran as it tries to salvage the nuclear deal.

On Monday, Trump tweeted that China and Japan depend on the security of the Persian Gulf waterways for the bulk of their oil imports, and he asked why the U.S.is protecting the shipping lanes for other countries "for zero compensation".

"All of these countries should be protecting their own ships on what has always been a risky journey". "They know precisely how to find us", he said. Iran also summoned an Emirati envoy in protest against the incident.

Jordan's Ministry of Affairs said that any attack on Saudi security was an assault on the security of the region.

Seeking Partners: Pompeo Lands in Saudi Arabia for Iran Crisis Talks
On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blamed the United States' "interventionist military presence" for fanning the flames. The penalties won't have a significant impact on a country that's already in recession and facing heavy sanctions from the U.S.

Another option could be military ships patrolling the Gulf waters and equipped with surveillance equipment to keep watch on Iran.

The official could not confirm if the case had been raised with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), whom Pompeo met later. "It is neither. It is spreading conflict and humanitarian disaster that was conceived of and perpetuated by the Islamic Republic of Iran".

A second USA official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the plan aimed to see US partners providing the majority of ships that would be positioned in intervals in the Gulf of Oman or the Strait of Hormuz, keeping watch.

Chief of the Iranian Navy Hossein Khanzadi warned on Monday that Iran's crushing response to violation of its territory can be repeated.

USA military cyber forces on Thursday launched a strike against Iranian military computer systems, according to United States officials. When further pressed on the issue, Trump swiftly shifted the subject to Iran, as he had done in previous instances.

Arab coalition spokesman Col Turki Al Maliki said yesterday that one person was killed and seven others injured in a Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia's Abha Airport.

Damage at Saudi Arabia's Abha airport. The Iranian-backed Houthis also claimed responsibility for bomb-laden drone strikes that targeted a key Saudi oil pipeline in recent weeks.

In a statement, Pompeo condemned the Abha airport attack and said the war in Yemen is not an isolated conflict. He accused Iran of funneling cash, weapons, and armed support to the Houthis, which Iran denies.

The escalation in violence threatens a United Nations -sponsored deal for a ceasefire and troop withdrawal from Hodeidah, which became the focus of the war previous year when the coalition tried to seize the port, the Houthis' main supply line and a lifeline for millions of Yemenis. The Houthis say the attacks are a response to relentless Saudi airstrikes on Yemen that have killed thousands.
