Anger in India as lychee-linked brain fever kills over 100 children

Encephalitis kills more than 100 children in India's Bihar state Children hold placards during a protest against the deaths of children in Bihar

Untrained doctors who don't have the skill to handle critical equipment in intensive care units, and the lack of an awareness drive because of the Lok Sabha elections in April-May, could be behind the sudden spike in the deaths of children due to suspected Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in this district. So far, almost 112 children have died due to encephalitis in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

The state's health minister came in for particular criticism after asking reporters about the score in India's cricket match against Pakistan on Sunday during a news conference on the crisis.

"Six children were discharged after being treated for AES", Singh said.

Rabri Devi, another opposition figure, called the deaths "cold-blooded murder".

An official release issued by the district administration on Monday said 103 children have died so far at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) and Kejriwal Hospital in Muzaffarpur. Kumar interacted with the ailing children, enquiring whether they were getting food and medicines in time.

Outbreaks have occurred annually during summer months in the same districts since 1995, typically coinciding with the lychee season.

The National Human Rights Commission has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government - as well as Kumar's state authorities - to say if there had been a "possible flaw" in implementation of vaccination and awareness programmes.

Children affected by Japanese encephalitis usually show symptoms of fever, seizures, vomiting, meningeal signs, altered mental status or even coma; in some cases limb paralysis is also noticed.

A plea was also filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to urgently constitute a team of medical experts for treatment of the children.

The outbreak has been exacerbated by a heatwave, with temperatures in Patna, Bihar's capital, reaching a high of 45.8 Celsius (114.5 Fahrenheit). Often the kids gorge on free-growing lychees on an empty stomach.
