Ancient Humans In China Were Smoking Marijuana 2,500 Years Ago, Study Finds

An excavation of a 2,500-year-old tomb in China has led scientists to believe they found the earliest evidence of people using cannabis to get high.

Researchers have found remnants of cannabis at ancient sites in Central Asia before, but the latest discovery points to the intentional use of plants with high levels of the active compound, THC, and to cannabis being inhaled rather than ingested. To their surprise, the results showed an exact match to the chemical signature of cannabis, particularly that with a high amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most potent psychoactive agent in the plant.

Cannabis plants have been cultivated in East Asia for their oily seeds and fibre from at least 4,000 BC.

Compared to cultivated varieties, wild cannabis plants contain lower levels of THC, one of the psychoactive compounds in cannabis.

The worldwide team, led by Meng Reng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, excavated 10 wooden pots, or braziers, containing burnt stones from tombs at the Jirzankal Cemetery.

New research suggests the people of Central Asia were smoking marijuana as early as the first millennium B.C. Scientists were able to identify THC preserved in funerary incense burners recovered from an ancient cemetery in the Eastern Pamirs, an extension of the Himalayas.

"Modern perspectives on cannabis vary tremendously cross-culturally", Spengler concludes in a press release, "but it is clear that the plant has a long history of human use, medicinally, ritually, and recreationally, over countless millennia".

When asked if he believed the 737 Max would resume flight before the end of the year, Muilenburg said, "I do, but again, I can't give you the specific timeline on it".

Samples collected by the researchers found the chemical signature for CBN (aka cannabinol) inside the braziers, a lesser-known cannabinoid that is often found in old cannabis. The Jirzankal Cemetery findings also suits with assorted veteran evidence for hashish utilize at burial sites in the Altai Mountains of Russian Federation.

"I think this is a wonderful example of how closely intertwined humans are and have been with the biotic world around them", study author Robert Spengler, laboratory director at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, said in a press conference announcing their findings this week. Most archaeological reports of ancient drug remains were published several decades ago, and some were later refuted as misleading, the study notes. Wild strains of cannabis growing at higher altitudes, for instance, can have a higher THC content. This non-psychedelic cannabis, which we now refer to as hemp, was used for clothing, food, and medicine. It is the first evidence of the recreational use of marijuana. If cannabis smoking originated there, or nearby, it may have helped to spread cannabis smoking from Central Asia around the world.

These data fit with the notion that the high-elevation mountain passes of Central and Eastern Asia played a key role in early trans-Eurasian exchange.

Regardless of the type these people had used, evidence suggests that smoking pot had its place in commemorating their dead.

Whether cannabis also had other uses in society is unclear, though it seems likely that the plant's ability to treat a variety of illnesses and symptoms was recognised early on.

"To our excitement we identified the biomarkers of cannabis, notably chemicals related to the psychoactive properties of the plant", said Yimin Yang at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
