That future has been decided and will see the end of the show, which has been a fixture of ITV daytime programming for 14 years.

However, MP Damian Collins, chairman of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMS), said in a statement that TV companies "have a duty to care to the people who take part in their programmes".

Carolyn McCall, ITV's CEO, announced on Wednesday: "Given the gravity of recent events we have made a decision to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show".

She said: "Given the gravity of recent events we have chose to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show".

'Everyone at ITV's thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond.

"This was a very hard decision to make but we felt that it would be inappropriate to continue to broadcast the show when a participant on it has so recently died", she wrote.

ITV said on Wednesday that it would continue to work on other projects with Kyle, a former insurance salesman who has fronted the show since 2005.

Steven Dymond was found dead on 9 May a week after filming the show, during which he took a lie detector test.

Theresa May's spokesman expressed "deep concern" about the incident yesterday and said that broadcasters must take action to support guests.

Dymond went onto the show to prove that he had not been unfaithful to his girlfriend, Jane Callaghan.

However, Miss Roberts said her experience on the show was very negative as she was led to perform in a certain way.

"It's hard, with so many shows on television, to know how you could stop any risk really of any side effects of a negative way of people who would appear on television".

"It is the right decision but I think there is still a case for a review of the way reality shows like this look after the welfare of their guests".
