Human iPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be hard to isolate directly from a patient.
"As a result of this perception, a lot of kids pick up e-cigarette smoking".
Instead, Wu and his team grew batches of cells that usually line human blood vessels.
Now, says the Associated Press, Wu is planning further studies with stem cells, taken from healthy, adult volunteers, to see how vaping may effect heart and brain tissue. They found that, when grown in a laboratory, endothelial cells exposed to the e-liquids - or to blood collected from e-cigarette users shortly after vaping - are less viable and exhibit significantly increased levels of molecules implicated in DNA damage and cell death. He conducted a study on flavored liquids for e-cigarettes, and studied six flavors with varying levels of nicotine.
Professor at Stanford University, Joseph Wu, said that according to the research study, the e-cigarettes are not a safe substitute for the traditional cigarettes.
The cells also were less able to help form new blood vessels or participate in wound healing, the findings showed.
Wu's conclusions coincide with those made by other researchers, who found that regular e-cigarette users had higher rates of heart attack and cardiovascular failure than the non-smoking public. The e-liquid flavored with caramel and vanilla also disrupted growth, but not as severely.

In recent years, many experienced smokers switched to e-cigarettes in an attempt to avoid the unsafe chemicals which can be found in tobacco smoke.
There's a lot of concern that these teens will wind up using e-cigarettes long-term, and that the damage done to their blood vessels will worsen over time, Wu and Robertson said.
"It's important for e-cigarette users to realize that these chemicals are circulating within their bodies and affecting their vascular health".
The findings "suggest that even without the smoke of combustible cigarette products, there may be a smouldering fire of adverse health effects", she wrote in an accompanying editorial.
