The reinstatement of the 16 charges in 2016, Zuma says, was politically motivated.

"Should they be dealt with outside of the four corners of the Constitution because they are suspected of having done what we don't like?" said Zuma's lawyer, Muzi Sikhakhane, to the court on Monday morning.

State prosecutors say that Zuma extracted a bribe of almost US$35,000 in exchange for the contract, as "protection money".

He argued that South Africa's first national director of public prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka, in announcing that Schabir Shaik, the one-time financial adviser to Jacob Zuma, would be prosecuted alone for corruption even though there was a prima facie evidence against the former president "who arguably was an accomplice prejudiced" his client.

Outside the Pietermartizburg high court, Zuma's supporters held a rally for the former president.

A corruption trial of former South African president Jacob Zuma has been postponed until October, after Zuma asked the case to be dropped over political interference and an "overzealous" investigation into his wrongdoing.

Jacob Zuma's lawyers argued on Monday that the former South African president had been treated unfairly by prosecutors in his attempt to have revived corruption charges set aside because he is unpopular in the country at large.

Sikhakhane added that the spy tapes revealed that long after Ngcuka had left the NPA, he was still conspiring on whether or not to charge Zuma and when to charge him with prosecutors.

Zuma, 77, is accused of taking bribes from French defence company Thales during his time as a provincial economy minister and later as deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) in the 1990s.

Zuma's lawyers also argued that there have been unreasonable delays to Zuma's case that could lead to him not receiving a fair trial.

The company reiterated that it has no knowledge of any transgressions committed by any of its employees in relation to the arms deal of 1999.

"Also, the rights of Zuma have been greatly undermined and we have evidence to prove that", he told the crowd of people wearing ANC t-shirts and army jumpsuits.
