Further testing showed that these reclaimed monomers are high quality enough that they can be used to produce high quality plastic.
Every day, millions of us drop a plastic bottle or cardboard container into the recycling bin - and we feel we're doing our bit for the environment.
Prior to the discovery, the unpredictability of the properties had made it almost impossible to perform what has been coined "the Holy Grail of recycling", a "circular" material that can be used over and over again for any number of products, including adhesives, phone cases, computer cables and more.
But a new research effort led by scientists at Berkeley Lab could provide a solution in the form of plastics that are designed from the ground up to be fully recyclable. Polymers are composed of shorter strands called monomers.
As it turns out, plastics that should be recycled can't be because of certain chemical qualities that the material has taken on because of additives, reducing the effectiveness of global recycling efforts.
Light yet sturdy, plastic is great - until you no longer need it.
"But we have discovered a new way to assemble plastics that takes recycling into consideration from a molecular perspective", Christensen said. Only less than a third of recyclable plastic is repurposed after the recycling process, and the rest are either disposed of as non-recyclable waste or incinerated.

Condensing these units into a long string forms a plastic called poly (diketoenamine) - or PDK - and the bonds can be dissolved easily using nothing more than a 12-hour soak in a strong acid bath.
"We're at a critical point where we need to think about the infrastructure needed to modernize recycling facilities for future waste sorting and processing", says Helms.
The researchers want to divert plastics from landfills and the oceans by incentivizing the recovery and reuse of plastics, which could be possible with polymers formed from PDKs.
Plastic manufacturers use different chemicals to boost the properties of the plastics they produced. This means that when it comes time to recycle the plastic, the monomers and the additives are chemically separated using an acidic solution, leaving the monomers free to bond with different additives to make different kinds of plastics.
"Circular plastics and plastics upcycling are grand challenges", said Brett Helms, a staff scientist in Berkeley Lab's Molecular Foundry, in the statement. That includes adhesives, phone cases, watch bands, shoes, computer cables, and hard thermosets that are created by molding hot plastic material. PDK differs from traditional plastics in the way additives bond to it and, unlike plastics that pile up at recycling plants today, the bonds the PDK plastic forms with other chemicals are reversible via an acid bath. "This is an exciting time to start thinking about how to design both materials and recycling facilities to enable circular plastics", said Helms. Right now, the team is working on making the material greener by incorporating plant-based materials.
