Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday arrived Brussels in an unplanned visit with European foreign ministers who had been meeting to bolster the faltering Iran nuclear deal against a USA assault.

Mr Pompeo's trip to Brussels comes amid escalating tensions between the two rivals.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is heading to Russian Federation - his first visit as the top U.S. diplomat - for talks with President Vladimir Putin amid persistent tensions between the two countries. The three will discuss a "full range of bilateral and multilateral challenges", said the US Departement of State on Friday.

Russian Federation earlier announced Pompeo's visit but it had been unclear whether he would meet Putin.

This will be the second meeting between Lavrov and Pompeo this month.

Iran announced on May 8, one year after the United States withdrew from the deal, that it was suspending some of its commitments under the agreement.

As tensions between Washington and Tehran over re-imposed USA sanctions have heightened in recent weeks, Moscow has sided with Iran in calling for the 2015 nuclear deal to remain in place.

Pompeo, who departed from Joint Base Andrews near Washington en route for Brussels, will hold talks with European officials on Iran and other issues on Monday before heading to Russian Federation, the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He will also participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to honour the sacrifices of those who died fighting with against the Nazi regime.

The three ministers and the EU's top diplomat Federica Mogherini will discuss their response to Iran's announcement on Wednesday that it meant to abandon commitments to the agreement.

She said that a "lack of leadership, unity and consistency" in the United States was the greatest challenge to countering a resurgent Russian Federation. Originally Pompeo had planned to meet Monday with US diplomats and business leaders in Moscow.

The exact timing and details of Monday's meeting with Pompeo are still unclear, diplomats said.

Pompeo has already canceled in recent days trips to Berlin and Greenland to focus on the Iran issue.
