The quake hit just 25k miles from Kokopo, the capital of the island of East New Britain, in the east of the Pacific nation.

A powerful 7.5 magnitude natural disaster struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea's New Britain island on Tuesday, prompting fears of "hazardous" tsunami waves for coasts within 1,000 km of the quake's epicenter.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves of up to 1 metre were possible along coastal areas up to 1000 kilometres from the epicentre, including Papua New Guinea and the almost Solomon Islands.

Kokopo town has a rapidly grown population of more than 20,000.

New Zealand is not at risk of any tsunami following a power natural disaster which hit Papua New Guinea earlier this morning.

At 3:59 a.m. HST, the PTWC issued a new statement, saying "a tsunami threat exists for parts of the pacific located closer to the natural disaster".

The quake took place 44 kilometers northeast of Kokopo in PNG, the USGS said. It was centred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres, it said.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves of up to 1 metre (3.3 feet) were possible along coastal areas up to 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) from the epicentre, including Papua New Guinea and the almost Solomon Islands.

It sits on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire", the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where much of the world's earthquakes and volcanic activity occurs.

It triggered an initial tsunami warning, though local officials said no waves were observed, nor any casualties reported yet but that they were seeking information on residents outside urban areas.
