Nebraska Farmer Cuts Off Leg to Escape Machine

Farmer sawed off leg with pocket knife to save his own life Man Amputates Leg with Pocket Knife After He's Trapped in Farm Equipment: 'I Just Started Sawing'
Patty Aguilar | 18 May, 2019, 04:58

Kaser, a grain farmer for over 40 years, said he just didn't think of the hopper opening.

"I didn't know what to do", he said Tuesday.

"It just sucked my leg in and I was trying to pull it out, but it kept pulling", Kaser told the news station.

"I stepped right in the damn thing". It grabbed ahold of me.

This time, though, it was different, as his leg got stuck in the hole.

"I like to be out and about and I know I will be", he said. "I knew I was done cutting because I felt a amusing feeling, maybe it was a tendon I cut". "I about gave up and said, 'Whatever happens happens". But then he remembered he had a pocket knife.

Not knowing when someone would arrive to help, and fearing he would pass out, a desperate Kaser did the unthinkable.

"I had my pocket knife in my pocket".

"I dang near dropped it in the auger", he said.

He said he doesn't remember experiencing much pain and didn't notice a lot of blood. "I was afraid it was going to suck me in more". It was the latter that betrayed him and ultimately cost him his leg: Kaser was alone on the farm that day when, in a moment's inattention, his foot got stuck in the corn hopper. "Finally, I was able to solve me and to crawl to my house". He called his son, who is on the local rescue squad. He was rushed to Bryan Medical Center in a helicopter. Kaser says he never lost consciousness.

This isn't the first time Kaser has had a scare like this on the farm. "I had that redone", he said.

Kaser was flown to a hospital following the incident and then spent a few weeks at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals' Lincoln, Nebraska campus.

Kaser will get a prosthetic limb once his leg has fully healed. Some [other patients] won't ever get out of their wheelchairs. "It could have always been worse". "They don't and I feel sorry for them". They're not getting out of them. "I get a chance to be pretty close to normal".
