US forces in Iraq and Syria on high alert for possible 'imminent threat' State Department Orders Non-Essential U.S. Government Employees Out Of Iraq
Patty Aguilar | 16 May, 2019, 12:31

Earlier today, all "nonemergency USA government employees" at both the embassy in Baghdad and the United States consulate in Erbil were ordered to leave Iraq, The New York Times reported.

However, the administration has not gone into great detail about the threat, leading even President Donald Trump's closest allies in Congress to press for more information.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the threat came from Iraqi militias commanded and controlled by Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Following the United States announcement on Wednesday, the commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said, "We are on the cusp of a full-scale confrontation with the enemy", the Fars news agency reported.

USA officials told ABC News last week that there were "clear indications" Iran or its proxy forces were preparing for a possible attack against US forces at sea and on land, including in Iraq and Syria, prompting the deployment of a carrier strike group and bomber task force to the region.

Despite global skepticism, the United States government has been pointing to increasing threats from Iran, a long-time enemy and rival of United States allies Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Romney said it's "inconceivable" that Trump would start a conflict with Iran.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ISNA news agency reported that an Iranian atomic energy official said Iran has officially stopped some commitments under the pact, and has no limit from now for production of enriched uranium and heavy water.

The United Arab Emirates will show restraint after attacks on oil tankers off its coast and is committed to de-escalation during a "difficult situation" caused by Iranian behaviour in the region, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"We fundamentally do not seek war with Iran", Pompeo said during a visit to Sochi, Russia, this week.

On Wednesday, the USA ordered all nonessential personnel to leave Iraq, and last week an aircraft carrier group and other resources were shifted to the Persian Gulf region.

Though Germany and the Netherlands said that they had suspended participation in a training mission for Iraqi troops, they cited general tension between the U.S. and Iran.

"As we pointed out previously, Mr. Trump is in danger of being cornered into choosing between a counterproductive use of force and allowing Iran to cross red lines".

The MT Andrea Victory, one of the alleged targets, sustained a hole in its hull just above its waterline from "an unknown object", its owner Thome Ship Management said in a statement. In the former conflict, Britain ultimately sent 45,000 troops to aid the United States in the invasion of Iraq, and Australia and Poland sent smaller numbers, while other countries provided political support.

Senator Bob Menendez, the senior Democrat on the Senate foreign relations panel, demanded a briefing "immediately" on the threat intelligence, any plans for war and the decision to order embassy staff out of Iraq.
